“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.” – 2 Timothy 1:7
Last year we did an object lesson in Kidz Church using oil and water, showing the kids the two don’t mix. We told the kids the oil represented our fear and the water represented our faith; when we poured the two in a glass together the oil rose to the top and the water settled at the bottom. That is what happens to us when we live in the spirit of fear and negativity, we let that rise to the front of our mind and control the way we live. Our faith slips to the back of our mind, we start to believe the lies the fear represents and our relationship with our God begins to fade.
In our devotional, Trusting God day by day, Joyce makes a great point about how to step out of living in fear. She says, “Discipline yourself to stand strong with your positive attitude in every circumstance.” She also says, “You can’t control what happens to you, but you can determine to go through it with the right attitude.” When God created us, He gave us the right Spirit but He also gave us a choice; we choose how we think, we choose our attitude. What attitude do you choose? Do you choose to let fear rise to the front of your life or do you choose to have the attitude of love, of power, of faith? Today take a step towards God, release the fear and negativity in your life and pour out the oil in your cup.
Prayer: Father, thank you for giving us the spirit of love and power. Forgive us for living in fear and negativity. We no longer want our fear to rise to the top. Today we choose You; today we choose our attitude to be one of faith. We pray in Jesus name, amen!
