“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” James 1:22

In kids ministry a few years ago someone produced a CD for kids with this amazing verse put to music. “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. I said do what it says…” It’s a fun song, and I still love to use it.

Wait. Wait. Wait. In what way am I deceiving myself if I listen only? Isn’t that what church people do? Listen to a preacher once a week? Listen to the music of God once a week while a team sings for me? No. He said we must do what it says.

If we’ve heard it, we’re accountable before God to do it. We don’t get overs when we get to heaven because we thought we were doing right by just listening. We don’t get overs when we get to heaven because our theology might have been just a little off — or we thought we could get to heaven just by showing up at His house once every three months or so.

No. He’s made it clear that we must obey His commands. If we love Him, we’ll obey His commands. If we’ve heard His Word, we’re responsible.

So in all your doing, do it right. In all your getting, get this right. We must do what the Word says. What’s it say?

Father God, forgive me for the times I think it’s okay to slight your word here and there and not obey, even when I know what I’ve read and what I’ve heard in your house. Help me obey, O God. I don’t want to be unfaithful in any area. You certainly aren’t unfaithful in any area to me. You’re always faithful. Thank You.
