“Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.” Ephesians 4:31 NIV

The bible says it rains on the just and the unjust. Bad things do happen to people… people we think are good. Forgiveness, however, comes when we release God and the people around us for things that happen.

I personally tire of hearing the phrase “Everything happens for a reason.” Where did that come from? That’s not biblical, and you will find that nowhere in scripture. Random things do happen. A basketball goal broke and fell on my first boyfriend’s neck when I was 18 years old. He and I had planned to attend bible seminary together, because God had gloriously saved Him a year previously. At the time I didn’t understand the crazy randomness of it. We may never understand stuff that happens. But God is still good!

The truth is our God is so amazing that he takes the random, crazy things that happen in the world and uses it somehow for His glory. He watches as a town pulls together to help out a family whose home has been destroyed.

But God does not instigate evil. Man does a pretty good job of instigating evil himself, without God’s help.

So let’s rid ourselves of bitterness, rage, and anger. It’s a choice. Say it aloud: “Lord, I release to you my bitterness. I’ve been hurt and I’ve not understood, but I trust You for justice. I release my rage and anger. I don’t want it. I release my plotting to make sure I look good. I release my manipulating of circumstances so I have my way. Rid me of my desire for vindication, for vindication comes from You, and only in Your time. Help me, God. Amen.”
